Why You Need to Remove That Stump

Many homeowners assume a stump will simply rot away on its own. In reality, a stump can take decades to decompose naturally, causing several problems along the way:

  • Pest Infestations: Decaying stumps are magnets for termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles. Once these pests establish a colony in the stump, they can easily migrate to your home.
  • Fungal Diseases: A rotting stump can harbor fungal diseases that spread through the root system to infect nearby healthy trees and plants.
  • Tripping Hazards & Mowing Obstacles: Stumps are dangerous tripping hazards for children and guests, and they make mowing your lawn difficult and frustrating.
  • New Sprout Growth: Many tree species will attempt to regrow from the stump, sending up dozens of small, unsightly shoots that steal nutrients from surrounding plants.

Our Stump Grinding Process

We use powerful, specialized stump grinding machinery to obliterate the stump quickly and safely, with minimal impact to your surrounding lawn.

  1. Site Assessment: We evaluate the stump’s size, root spread, and proximity to underground utilities or structures. (We always recommend contacting MISS DIG before any grinding begins).
  2. Deep Grinding: Our equipment grinds the main stump and surface roots well below the soil line (typically 4 to 6 inches deep). This ensures the stump will not regrow and allows you to plant grass or landscape over the area.
  3. Clean & Level: The grinding process produces a pile of wood chips and soil (mulch). We can either leave this nutrient-rich mulch for you to use in your garden beds, or we can haul it away and level the area for an additional fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I plant a new tree in the exact same spot after grinding?

It is generally not recommended to plant a new tree in the exact same hole immediately. Even after grinding, the old tree’s deep root system remains underground and will take years to decompose. The old roots make it difficult for a new tree to establish itself and can deplete the soil of nitrogen. We recommend planting a new tree at least 3 to 5 feet away from the old stump location.

How deep do you grind the stump?

We typically grind the stump 4 to 6 inches below the surrounding grade. This depth is sufficient to prevent regrowth and allows you to add topsoil and plant grass seed over the area seamlessly.

Will stump grinding damage my lawn?

Our specialized equipment is designed to be highly maneuverable and low-impact. While the immediate area around the stump will be disturbed by the grinding process, we take great care to protect the rest of your lawn and landscaping while accessing the stump.

Do I need to grind the stump immediately after removing the tree?

While you can wait, we highly recommend grinding the stump at the same time the tree is removed. It is more cost-effective to have it done while our crew is already on-site, and it immediately eliminates the risks of pests and disease.
